Famous only child – May Sarton, Novelist, Poem and Memoirist
May Sarton’s real name is Eleanore Marie Sarton (May 3, 1912–July 16, 1995). She was a Belgian-born American novelist, memoirist and poet. Her parents were science historian George Sarton and Mabel Eleanor Elwes, an English artist. An only child, she was three years old when her family moved to Boston, Massachusetts and went to school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. May Sarton also took theatre lessons in her teens.
In 1945 she met Judy Matlack, who became her partner for the next thirteen years. They separated in 1956. Honey in the Hive (1988) is about their relationship. May Sarton later moved to York, Maine. She died of breast cancer.
